Pharmacy

Caritas Baby Hospital’s pharmacy department is responsible for meeting the inpatient and outpatient medication needs. In particular, the pharmacy team has the expertise to compound and prepare specific formulations that are not available in the market. They also advise parents on the safe, effective and efficient use of medications, including the proper use and storage of medications at home. On another educational level, they coach healthcare professionals and nursing teams on increasing the safety and quality of medical-related processes affecting patients.

As a daily routine, the pharmacy team dispense medication to the outpatient department, as well as distributing the required medications throughout the inpatient wards. In support for the latter, the clinical pharmacist reviews all patients’ medication orders and contributes in decision making related to best medication practices, which involve drug-drug interaction, dosage recommendations and monitoring parameters.

On a policy level, the pharmacy’s team continuously develops and amends policies and procedures that promote and track the rational use of medications, especially antibiotics, according to international recommendations. This, in turn, contributes to the improvement of medication management and pharmaceutical care of patients to the highest standards in a hospital setting. The team ensures the “7 rights” of medication administration are respected: the right patient, right dose, right route, right time, right drug with the right information and documentation.
