Honouring the Life and Legacy of Pastor Michael Schweiger

It is with deep sorrow that we bid farewell to our esteemed honorary member, Pastor Michael Schweiger, who passed away on March 7, 2025, at the age of 65 after a serious illness.

As the longtime president of Children’s Relief Bethlehem (2004–2014), Pastor Schweiger led the organization with vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment. Prior to his presidency, he had already served as vice president for four years, playing a crucial role in shaping the organization’s mission and impact.

Under his leadership, significant construction projects at Caritas Baby Hospital, including the outpatient clinic, the intensive care unit, and the administration building, were initiated, expanded, or completed. His efforts contributed to the hospital’s sustainable growth, ensuring better medical care for children in Bethlehem and beyond. Deeply connected to the people of Palestine and the surrounding region, he cherished his work with local communities.

Throughout his tenure, Pastor Schweiger undertook more than 50 trips to the Holy Land, not only visiting Bethlehem but also traveling to the Gaza Strip and other locations to support partners of Children’s Relief Bethlehem. His particular concern was always for the most vulnerable—those who suffered the most from political and social hardships.

Following his presidency at Children’s Relief Bethlehem, Pastor Schweiger dedicated himself fully to his pastoral work in the Freiburg im Breisgau. There, too, he remained deeply committed to the weak and marginalized, exemplified by his annual service for refugees. He was also a passionate advocate for intercultural and interfaith dialogue, fostering exchanges in art, and culture, seeing himself as a bridge-builder between religions and communities.

Pastor Michael Schweiger devoted his life to social causes, leaving an enduring impact on the work of Children’s Relief Bethlehem, Caritas Baby Hospital and beyond. We have lost not only a valued supporter but also a dear friend. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and all those who held him close.
