Metabolic Diseases

  1. Failure to Thrive (FTT):

FTT is usually determined by weight as it is related to insufficient weight gain or abnormal weight loss in children. Affected children either suffer from low or poor increase in their weight in comparison with other children of the same age.

  2. Type 1 Diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects children whose bodies either stop producing insulin or are unable to use it. Insulin helps glucose in the blood in reaching the cells which will in turn be used as fuel. Failure to do so leads the body to suffer from insulin build-up in the blood, resulting in high blood sugar or hyperglycemia.

Accordingly, the treatment involves insulin from the pancreas being replaced with insulin injections or an insulin pump.

Symptoms of this condition include weight loss, extreme hunger, unusual thirst and dehydration, frequent urination, nausea, vomiting and blurred vision.

  3. Obesity:

Obesity is a complex issue related to lifestyle, the environment and genes. It is evaluated based on WHO and CDC growth charts.
