Urinary Tract Infections

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of your child’s urinary system, specifically the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. It is one of the most common pediatric infections that affects boys and girls during the first year, and less frequently after that.

Symptoms of UTI include:

  • Pain, burning or a stinging sensation when urinating
  • Frequent urination
  • Fever
  • Stomachache
  • Urine with a foul smell, cloudy in appearance and might contain blood.

UTIs are treated with antibiotics. Pediatricians may repeat urine tests within a few days to ensure that the infection is cured.
